C. W. ANDERSON'S FAVORITE HORSE STORIES Edited by C. W. Anderson Stories by various authors (DUTTON [USA[ 1967) ILLUSTRATED BY C. W. ANDERSON Reprinted in hardback by original publishers. SUMMARY: A mixture of horse stories, poems and factual accounts chosen and illustrated by the equine artist and author. A strong emphasis on racing with accounts of racing legends such as Man O'War and Citation included. With stories/articles by a number of authors plus C. W. Anderson himself. A nice looking book with lovely illustrations although the stories are a little outweighed by the non-fiction and are mainly available elsewhere. However all are of good quality, including one absolute corker by John Taintor Foote, and the non-fictional articles are interesting to those fascinated by racing. Aimed at adult or older teen readership. PONYMAD OVERALL RATING: 4 HORSESHOES
Stories include:
THE LAST CATCH By Will James (Originally published in Sun Up in 1931) SUMMARY: A cowboy longs to catch a black stallion but when the horse is in his grasp he has second thoughts. PONYMAD RATING: 3 HORSESHOES

OLE MAN SANFORD By John Taintor Foote (Originally published in Blister Jones in 1913) SUMMARY: A story about racing character Blister Jones, Foote's most popular fictional character. Blister recounts the story of an Mr. Sanford, an old gentleman who bemoans the modern ways, in particular the practice of giving race horses stimulants. When the old timer is bequeathed some money he buys a horse and give instructions to trainer Blister that the horse not be doped. But Blister knows the horse cannot win without it and does not want the old man to lose his money - what can he do? Excellent racing story from a bygone era. PONYMAD RATING: 4 HORSESHOES Read the story on line for free (plus others from Blister Jones)
THE LOOK OF EAGLES By John Taintor Foote (Originally published in Hoofbeats in 1950) SUMMARY: Follow up to the above story. Blister and Sanford are re-united. Sanford recounts how he can tell a horse has champion quality by a look in its eyes which he calls 'the look of eagles.' A rich owner is so impressed by Sanford's reminiscences that he tells him he can have any colt from his stable if he sees one with the 'look.' But Sanford disappoints his audience when he picks an undersized black colt instead of the magnificent bay, Postman. Has the old man lost his touch? This story has been dubbed 'one of the very best horse stories ever written' and this is not far wrong. A superb gripping racing story with memorable characters. PONYMAD RATING: 5 HORSESHOES
THE RIDE OF HIS LIFE By David Gray SUMMARY: Humourous adult hunting story with a twist in the tale. A Spanish visitor is given a safe horse to go hunting on, but after a while his confidence grows and he demands a better horse - Emperor, the best horse in the stable.
